Ultimate X 2018 - Sun City - South Africa

BMX Battle in Africa | ULT.X 2018

May 212018

When Ultimate X announced they were changing the venue of the contest to Sun City in 2018. We knew we had to get the Monster Energy BMX team over to South Africa to ride it.

Fresh off a big weekend at Fise Montpellier and then down to Cape Town for The Night Harvest. The boys packed their bags and headed to Sun City to take in a slice of paridise, and of course throw down on the park. Kyle Baldock, Pat Casey, Alex Coleborn, Greg Illingworth, Alex Nikulin, Ben Wallace brought their A-Game with huge tricks and original lines in the heart of the African bush.

It wasn’t long until things got heated on the park. With minimal practice, Ben Wallace, Pat Casey went straight to work. Ben brought his signature bag of tricks out and breezed through qualifiers with huge 360 lookbacks on the spine and clinical perfection. Pat Casey always comes through with a mix of burly and tech wizardry, earning himself a spot in the finals. If there’s a gap on the park. Greg Illingworth will be one to jump it. Greg's run started off with a wild table transfer over the gap but a harsh crash near the end cost him a spot in the finals this year.

The heavy hitters were also in town at Sun City. Kyle Baldock, Alex Coleborn and Alex Nikulin are no strangers to standing on top of a podium and they were hungry for it. Fitting in more than double of the riders in the field. Alex Nikulin stretched some serious cliffhanger flips which always stokes out the crowd and the judges. Alex Coleborn knows what it takes to win a contest. Bringing out all the bangers and tech tricks that blow minds every time. Alex just missed the podium with a 4th place finish. You could tell X Games Gold Medalist Kyle Baldock was on the hunt to take the win. With no remorse, blasting out a 720 whip in the start of his run and doing 540 flairs, spine front flips with ease earned himself in the 3rd place spot just a few points back from fellow Aussie Logan Martin and young gun Marcus Christopher who went all in on their runs.

After the finals a 20 minute best trick jam went down, with the boys still warmed up from the contest. Banger after banger went down, making it super hard for the judges to make a decision. Pat Casey went for what seemed like an impossible trick. One popped tire and a few tries later, he pulled off an insane 540 double whip over the spine!
