Chasing the Dakar: Casey wins the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge

Apr 062019

Simply competing in the Dakar is a real bucket list item for many off-road racers. However winning the legendary endurance rally is something different all together. US driver Casey Currie knows this all too well.

The 34 year old from California eats, sleeps, and drinks motorsport - and has set his sights on climbing the top step of the podium when the Dakar moves from South America to Saudi Arabia in 2020.

It’s a long road though, and true to form Casey isn’t messing around. Having signed with the Monster Energy Can-AM Team at the back end of 2018, Casey went on to finishing fourth at his Dakar debut while competing in the side-by-side category, as well as picking up the rookie of the year award.

As his next step towards the Dakar goal Casey headed to the blistering heat of the Abu Dhabi desert for the aptly named Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Reunited with the Monster Energy Can-Am Team, alongside veteran desert racer Brazilian Reinaldo Varela, the duo enjoyed a sensational team performance - with Casey winning the T3 category and finishing fourth overall.

“To be here at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge marks one year for me switching over to long distance rallies. I hadn’t competed in anything like this 12 months ago, and now I’ve got three - including the Dakar - in my pocket. I’ve got a great team with South Racing and Monster Energy onboard. I think as the only American I’m in a unique spot. To get the chance to travel the world and race is just fantastic.

“Back home I don't think I know even four guys that have raced outside of California and Mexico. So to get to come to race here in Abu Dhabi is just awesome. We raced in some of the most difficult sand dunes in the world over five days and temperatures at 105 °F (40 °C) with no mechanical failures. The atmosphere, the people, the FIA were all just top notch and its been an honour to part of it. I got a new co-driver for this event, and we just gelled really well. Everything that we are doing at the rallies around the Dakar is for one goal - and that is to win Dakar!”
