Brabec’s stellar 2019 rolls on with Sonora Rally spoils in Mexico

Mar 252019

Ricky Brabec swapped Las Vegas Craps tables for cacti and continued his fast and winning streak of rally racing in 2019. The American toasted victory in the Nevada metropolis at the MINT 400 earlier this month and then headed south for the Sonora chase through the plains and landscapes of Mexico.

Five days, six specials and more than 1300km meant a demanding trek close to the USA border and in the northwest of the country. Dunes (almost 500km), fast trails and diversity of rough terrain and conditions – not to mention heavy emphasis on navigation – meant that Sonora was a different test compared to the MINT and close to the rigours typically associated with the Dakar.

Brabec stamped his mark on the chrono in the first three stages and then strategically managed his way through the rest of the rally to make sure of his success, and continue the positive momentum.

“This rally was the first of the year for me so I was excited to just be able to ride the big bike again with some navigation,” Ricky said. “This desert to me is like home so it makes it easy to show up with a small crew to race and as well to train. There’s a little of everything and for this I believe it’s a proven training ground. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year racing and training. We must stay strong in the fight.”

Brabec will enter the AMA Hare and Hound series in Idaho this coming weekend while the rest of the Monster Energy HRC crew look forward to the first round of the FIM Cross-Country Rally World Championship next week in Abu Dhabi.
