A Monster Energy preview of the 2022 Surf City El Salvador Pro

Griffin Colapinto Wins Surf City El Salvador Pro

Jun 172022

El Salvador’s Punta Roca is a world-class wave, but during the waiting period for the 2022 Surf City El Salvador Pro, conditions were abysmal. Almost like having a filet mignon arrive at your table charred to bits. The good news? The Monster team is always ravenous. They didn’t flinch, and devoured the sub-par conditions, and their opponents, straight to the podium.

Back from injury, Yago Dora joined the crew in Central America and launched a couple of the most impressive airs of the entire season. He’d end up falling in the Round of 16 to teammate Filipe Toledo, who used his precision blade work to make sashimi of the wobbly right point break. With nearly every heat in the excellent range, he was destined for the finals.

On the other side of the draw, Griffin Colapinto was on a similar trajectory, driving his jungle-matching board through powerful hooks and testing its aerodynamics with a variety of big airs.

Griffin and Filipe would ultimately meet in the final, where they went blow-for-blow with early 9s, then backing them up with mid-range scores that put them in a dead tie, 16 points each. But Filipe had the higher single-wave score — a 9.57 — which gave him the edge over Griff. With only a few minutes left, Filipe held priority, and it was time to play defense. But sometimes, defense is hard. Filipe let Griff go on an inside runner and he demolished it, nabbing an 8 and taking the win, 17 to 16.

With these results, Griffin jumps four spots to No. 3 in the world, while Filipe holds onto the yellow jersey, and the top spot. Congrats, fellas.

Next stop, Brazil. Let’s gooooo!
