Legends show up for huge #BritishSGP

Sep 232019

How do you make an event as awesome as the British Speedway Grand Prix even bigger and even better?

That’s the question we asked ourselves and the answer we came up with was to fly in some absolute motorcycling icons and pull off the biggest Monster Energy rig riot of the year, and we think it worked.

Road racing legend John McGuinness, FMX shredder Jeremy ‘Twitch’ Stenberg and four-time Speedway world champion Greg Hancock all descended on Cardiff, Wales for an action-packed weekend – and they loved every minute.

Hancock has been taking some time away from racing while he cares for his wife Jennie, who is battling cancer, but he headed over to Europe for the first time all year to check out the competition ahead of a racing return and he was the perfect tour guide for Twitch, who was taking in his first taste of Speedway.

Over 45,000 people packed into the Principality Stadium for the penultimate round of the 2019 season and most of them turned up hoping to see our man Tai Woffinden win his home round for the first time.

Those hopes were pretty much dashed when he had a huge high-side in his very first race and even though he was able to walk back to the paddock, the damage to his bike and body was a bit too hefty to bounce back from.

The spoils went to Danish racer Leon Madsen, but with series leader Bartek Zmarzlik keeping his nine-point lead intact at the top he looks set to win his first championship in two weeks’ time.

Our cameras went behind the scenes with the Monster Energy crew all weekend, so take a look through the gallery and keep your eyes peeled for our exclusive BTS video edit coming this week too.

Until next time, Cardiff!
