LH44 Wraps 2019 In Style

Dec 022019

Lewis Hamilton topped off a sensational record-breaking season with his 11th victory of the year at F1’s season closer in Abu Dhabi last weekend.

The 34 year old, who sealed his sixth Formula One world crown two races before the end of the season in record breaking style, celebrated the win at Las Marina by pulling donuts on the finish line; after crossing it almost 17 seconds ahead of second placed Max Verstappen.

It was a fitting end to the season for Lewis, as he started from pole at Yes Marina, led every lap, and set the fastest lap in truly commanding style. The win in Abu Dhabi was remarkably also his 151st podium and the 84th victory of his F1 career to date. "What an incredible year it has been," said Lewis, who won 413 points over the 2019 season; his best ever haul.

"What an incredible stretch it's been with this team. After winning the Constructors' and the Drivers' Championship, I think it was really important for us as a team to continue to push.

"We hadn't got absolutely everything from the overall perfect package. So we were just trying to push the limits and push the boundaries, so this is the perfect way to end the season - a lot of young drivers behind me, making me feel young, which is great!

"I'm really just grateful to my team who have continued to push all year long and just have never lost sight of the objective. We've all had a common goal and inspire each other to continue to push and strive for perfection.

"So incredibly grateful to everyone and I hope that everyone at Mercedes and our partners. I'm sure they are pretty happy.”

While Lewis took the top step of the podium, his Silver Arrows teammate, Valtteri Bottas, produced a heroic drive to go from last on the grid to finish fourth. The Finnish ace was arguably the driver of the day as he scythed his way through the field.

"This is a nice way to end the season," said Valtteri. "It was a good race for me, I had a lot of fun out there overtaking the others. I don't think I could have extracted any more from the car today. It was pretty close in the end, but it wasn't quite enough to overtake Charles Leclerc for a spot on the podium.”
