TT 2022 UNLEASHED

Jun 152022

Nothing comes close. The speed; the challenge; and the chance to have your name etched into motorcycle racing legend. After nearly three years of nervous waiting, the Isle of Man TT roared back into action last week. What’s more after a fortnight of highs and lows, records were broken and champions were crowned.

The mixture of emotions, tension and pressure is totally unique. For both fans and racers alike, the spectacle of pushing up to nearly 200mph around the legendary Mountain Course is something that can’t be replicated anywhere else in the world.

Read on for just a small selection of the headline shots and stories that came from the latest edition of the iconic Isle of Man TT.

HICKY WINS THE SENIOR

Peter Hickman became only the third rider in Isle of Man TT history to take four victories in a single race week; after he dominated the TT’s event ending Senior TT race. The 35 year old racer had stamped his authority on this year’s TT clearly from the outset, winning the very first big bike (Superbike) TT at the beginning of race week. Hicky quickly followed that up with further wins in the Superstock and Supertwin category also. What’s more it is the second time Hickman has won the Senior TT, adding to his previous victory in 2018. If all that wasn't enough, Hicky also broke the TT speed record, clocking in at a whopping 199.786mph on the Sulby Straight.

After the Senior TT Hicky said: "What a week. Massive highs and lows throughout the week for everyone. The Gas Monkey BMW team were absolutely phenomenal, and the bike has just been ace. We actually had an issue in the race which wasn't great, but we managed what we had to manage, and never let the gap get below 10 seconds once we got it. We sat there and tried to chill out and not break the thing. But she made it to the end! Our thoughts are with the people who are unfortunately not coming home with us this time. It has not been a great TT for that sort of thing. We all know the risks, and we are here because we love it.A lot of people don't understand us, and I get that. But honestly my thoughts are with you all. Thanks to everyone who supports us, and that's from partners to sponsors to team personnel, all the fans around the circuit who were brilliant again."

DUNLOP SCORES 21 WINS

Joey Dunlop, John McGuinness and now, Michael Dunlop. That is the list of men with 21 Isle of Man TT victories or more to their name. Having dominated both Monster Energy Supersport races, Michael is now rapidly closing in on the very top of the all time winners list. Perhaps more impressive still is that feat was achieved on a Yamaha R6 built and run by Dunlop’s own MD Racing team.

A man of few words, Dunlop said: “Aye, 20 wins. It’s been good to me. I tell you, I rode hard in that one, it’s good to back again. I think people think I don’t have the pace anymore, so it’s good to get the two wins. The wee 600 was going well, I felt good and we just got on with things. It’s all been done with our own team, built the bike ourselves, in-house stuff. So, yeah, fantastic. The 600 was running perfect.” Hit play below to see Michael in action…

MCGUINNESS RACES BEYOND 100

A true Iroad racing icon; John McGuinness celebrated his 100th start at the 2022 Isle of Man TT. What’s more the Morecambe Missile placed a solid fifth place in the event opening six-lap RST Superbike race, as well as a top-ten finish in the Senior TT. In a TT career that started in 1996, the Morecambe Missile was back with Honda Racing on the island for the first time in six years and back on the Honda Fireblade with which he’d enjoyed so much success in the past.

McGuinness said: “I'm so happy with the result. To be back here on the Fireblade and with this team has been like coming home, I'm so grateful to Harv (Havier Beltran – team manager) for bringing me back into the team. And at the end of the day it's my 100th start, it's been a wonderful day celebrating that with my family, the team and the fans. I've never seen so many on the course, and they're all waving. It's been special..

What’s more, McGuinness marked the occasion permanently with a tattoo: “I was in the tattoo place with the Monster Energy team, and at first I bottled it, but then I just went for it and got a map of the circuit with a ‘100’ in the middle. I like it - but it did hurt though haha!”
